Why IG-11 matters to collectors

IG-11 is a fan-service design that earned its place. The IG assassin droid appeared in The Empire Strikes Back for a few frames and became a cult favourite anyway, largely through Kenner's 1980 figure and the expanded-universe material that grew around it. Bringing the silhouette back and giving it a voice and an arc was the first sign that The Mandalorian understood what its audience cared about.

Key issues and milestones

  • The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - IG-88 stands in the bounty hunter lineup for seconds of screen time and becomes a fan fixture anyway.
  • Kenner IG-88 action figure (1980) - A tall, spindly figure that stood out in a lineup of identically sized toys, and a favourite of vintage collectors.
  • The Mandalorian, Chapter 8 (2019) - IG-11's exit, and the moment the series proved it would actually spend its characters.
  • The Mandalorian, Season 3 (2023) - The droid is rebuilt, which is a very Star Wars solution to a very final ending.
Fun fact

The original IG-88 head was reportedly built partly from a Rolls-Royce Derwent jet engine part that had been sitting in the ILM model shop, which is why the droid's head looks nothing like anything else in the film.

Collecting IG-11 through the years

The IG design has one of the odder collecting stories in Star Wars because the original prop was assembled from found parts, including aircraft engine components, in the ILM tradition of building spaceships out of model kits. Kenner's 1980 IG-88 is a distinctive vintage figure, and its height made it a target for the loose-figure market long before the streaming revival. Since 2019 the newer IG-11 has been covered by Hasbro's Black Series and by premium 1:6 manufacturers, and the two designs are close enough that collectors often display them together.

VeVe's IG-11 releases are droid figures inside the officially licensed Star Wars catalogue. The proportions make it an unusual sculpt to display next to humanoid figures, which is part of the appeal. Officially licensed, scheduled drops, tiered rarities with limited premium editions.
