Why Obi-Wan Kenobi matters to collectors
Two actors, one character, forty-five years apart, and both performances are load-bearing. Guinness made a space serial feel like real drama in 1977; Ewan McGregor spent three prequels and a streaming series filling in everything the 1977 film only implied. Collectors who came in through the prequels and collectors who came in through the original trilogy are often chasing entirely different-looking figures of the same man.
Key issues and milestones
- Kenner Ben Kenobi action figure (1978) - First wave, and split by collectors into grey-hair and white-hair variants that came from different production runs.
- The Phantom Menace (1999) - McGregor takes the role, and the duel with Darth Maul becomes the prequel era's signature sequence.
- Revenge of the Sith (2005) - Mustafar, and the moment the 1977 dialogue finally has a scene behind it.
- Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) - The limited series that put Guinness's exile years on screen and reunited McGregor with Hayden Christensen.
Guinness negotiated a share of the film's gross rather than a larger fee, a deal that made him one of the better-paid people in the production by a wide margin.
Collecting Obi-Wan Kenobi through the years
Ben Kenobi was in the first Kenner wave, so vintage examples are plentiful and the collecting is about card condition, hair-colour variants, and which country's card back you have. The prequel era doubled the character's merchandise footprint by giving him a completely different look, and again in 2022 with the series. Original-trilogy robes and production materials appear occasionally at entertainment auctions. Alec Guinness's own famously dim view of the films is part of collecting folklore, and signed material from him is scarce because he mostly declined to sign Star Wars items.
