Why Luke Skywalker matters to collectors
Luke is the character the whole original trilogy is built to explain, and he is also the figure every vintage collector started with. The Kenner Luke was in the first wave, in the Early Bird kit, and on the front of the box art. If Star Wars collecting has an entry point, this is it.
Key issues and milestones
- Kenner Early Bird Certificate Package (1977) - Kenner sold an empty box for Christmas because the figures were not ready, and Luke was one of the four that arrived in the mail.
- Double-telescoping lightsaber Luke (1978) - The earliest production run had a two-stage extending saber that was quickly simplified, making it one of the most chased vintage variants.
- The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - Bespin Luke, the hand, and the line that made the saga a family story.
- Return of the Jedi (1983) - Jedi Knight Luke in black gives Kenner one of its best-selling later-wave figures.
The character was called Luke Starkiller through early drafts and into the first days of filming, and Hamill has said the change to Skywalker came down before the shoot got far.
Collecting Luke Skywalker through the years
Luke collecting is vintage Kenner collecting in miniature. The double-telescoping saber variant is the piece serious collectors talk about, because it only existed for part of the earliest production run and the difference is a few millimetres of plastic. Beyond that there are the Early Bird mailer figures, the Jedi Knight variants with different saber colours, and a long tail of international card backs that carry their own followings. On the prop side, Luke's lightsaber hero props from the original trilogy have crossed the block at major entertainment auctions, which pulled a lot of mainstream attention toward the category.

Luke Skywalker on VeVe
VeVe's Luke releases pair a character figure with his X-Wing, which is the right combination for this character since the ship is as recognisable as the pilot. Both are officially licensed and drop on the standard Star Wars schedule with tiered rarities. The X-Wing in particular suits full-scale AR display in a way a small figure cannot.
