Why Donald Duck matters to collectors
Donald has appeared in more theatrical shorts than Mickey, and in comics he is arguably the bigger character worldwide. In parts of Europe the Donald comic is a weekly institution with a readership that dwarfs anything the shorts ever reached. That split between the American cartoon Donald and the European comics Donald is one of the strangest facts in character collecting, and it means his collectible history runs on two separate tracks.
Key issues and milestones
- The Wise Little Hen (1934) - His debut in the Silly Symphonies series.
- Donald Duck newspaper strip launch (1938) - A daily strip that ran for decades and built his comics audience.
- Four Color #9, Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold (1942) - Carl Barks's first Donald comic work, which set the template for everything after.
- Der Fuehrer's Face (1943) - A wartime short that won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
Clarence Nash voiced Donald for more than fifty years, and Disney recorded him in several languages so the same voice would be used worldwide rather than dubbed locally.
Collecting Donald Duck through the years
Donald comic collecting is dominated by Carl Barks, the artist who worked uncredited for decades and was known to readers only as the good duck artist. His Four Color and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories issues are the keys, and Four Color #178 from 1947, which introduced Uncle Scrooge, is the one most collectors want. Barks later produced authorised oil paintings of his own characters that sell through fine-art channels rather than comic ones. On the merchandise side, 1930s and 1940s Donald tin toys, celluloids and wartime items are the Disneyana high end, and European weekly comics from the same period have their own regional collector base.
