Why Valkyrie matters to collectors
Brunnhilde carried the Defenders through the 1970s, which was Marvel's strangest team book by a wide margin. She is a warrior with a genuinely alien relationship to death - it is her job, not her fear - and that gives her a register no other Marvel character occupies.
Key issues and milestones
- The Avengers #83 (1970) - The Valkyrie identity first appears, used by the Enchantress in disguise - a book collectors treat carefully for that reason.
- The Defenders #4 (1972) - Brunnhilde takes the role for real and joins the team she would define.
- The Defenders #109 (1982) - A late-run issue from the stretch where the book leaned fully into its own oddness.
- Thor: Ragnarok (2017) - Tessa Thompson plays her, and the character got more mainstream attention in one film than in forty years of comics.
Her sword Dragonfang was carved from the tooth of an actual dragon by Merlin, according to Marvel continuity, then passed through Doctor Strange before it reached her.
Collecting Valkyrie through the years
Valkyrie collecting turns on a technicality that the hobby argues about constantly: Avengers #83 has the costume and the name but not the character, and Defenders #4 has the character. Both get bought, and dealers label them differently depending on who is selling. Avengers #83 is also notable for the Lady Liberators story, which gives it a second reason to be collected. The Defenders run from the early 1970s is one of the more affordable Bronze Age Marvel titles to complete, and the early issues are the only expensive part.
