Why Spider-Woman matters to collectors

Jessica Drew started as a business decision and became one of Marvel's most durable street-level characters. She has been an agent, a private investigator, a Skrull impostor's cover identity and an Avenger, and the through line is that she is usually the most competent person in the room and the least interested in saying so.

Key issues and milestones

  • Marvel Spotlight #32 (1977) - The debut, in the same anthology title that launched Ghost Rider and Werewolf by Night.
  • Spider-Woman #1 (1978) - Her own ongoing series begins, and runs fifty issues - an unusually long life for a 1970s spin-off.
  • New Avengers #1 (2005) - Bendis puts her on the team, which is where most modern readers met her.
  • Secret Invasion #1 (2008) - The payoff to a long Skrull plot that had been hiding in plain sight across the previous three years of Avengers books.
Fun fact

Her first series was cancelled with issue 50 in a story where she actually dies, and Marvel published a full issue of her funeral before bringing her back years later.

Collecting Spider-Woman through the years

Marvel Spotlight #32 sat quietly for decades and only started drawing attention once Jessica became an Avengers fixture. It is a 1977 book, so the print run was healthy but the paper stock of that era browns badly, which is why high-grade copies are harder than the production numbers suggest. The 1978 ongoing is one of the more affordable complete runs in Bronze Age Marvel, and the Frank Miller-era covers on the later issues are the ones collectors single out. Her 2000s appearances are plentiful and cheap, which makes her a good entry point for anyone building a character run from scratch.

Spider-Woman on VeVe

VeVe has put Jessica in the Marvel Mightys line, the stylised chibi format that strips a character down to silhouette and colour. Her costume is one of the strongest designs of the 1970s for exactly that reason - red, yellow and black with the underarm webbing, all readable at any size. Marvel Mightys drop on schedule with tiered rarities.
