Why Predator matters to collectors
The Predator is a design that survived being thrown out and rebuilt from scratch, which is most of what makes it interesting. Mandibles, dreadlocks, thermal vision, shoulder cannon and an actual hunting code: the character has rules, and the films that work are the ones that respect them. The variant-heavy VeVe series leans into the trophy-hunting culture the films established.
Key issues and milestones
- Predator (1987) - The Central American jungle, an elite squad picked off one by one, and a creature nobody had seen before.
- Predator 2 (1990) - Los Angeles, and a trophy wall cameo that launched three decades of crossover speculation.
- Alien vs. Predator (2004) - The crossover finally made, after years of comics and games had already done it.
- Prey (2022) - A 1719 Comanche setting, an early Predator design, and the best-reviewed entry since the original.
Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast inside the first creature suit, which looked so poor it was scrapped. Stan Winston sketched the replacement on a flight, and James Cameron, sitting next to him, suggested the mandibles.
Collecting Predator through the years
Predator collecting is built around variants, and that started with the films themselves: each new Predator got its own mask, armour and scarring, so licensed lines have always shipped multiple versions of the same creature. NECA's long-running figure line covered dozens of them, including designs pulled from comics and games rather than film. Screen-used masks and armour from the 1987 shoot are the high end, and the scrapped original suit design is a collecting story of its own.
Predator on VeVe
VeVe's Jungle Predator series releases the creature as a set of variants rather than one definitive sculpt, with Seasoned Hunter, Young Blood, Battle Scarred and others carrying different armour and scarring. Collecting the spread is the point of a series built this way. Drops are scheduled with tiered rarities separating standard from limited editions.
