Why Mysterio matters to collectors

Mysterio has no powers at all. Everything he does is illusion, chemistry and stagecraft, and that makes him the villain who scales best with the era - in 1964 he used smoke and mirrors, and in modern stories he uses whatever the current technology allows. The fishbowl helmet stayed the same the whole time.

Key issues and milestones

  • The Amazing Spider-Man #13 (1964) - The debut, with the smoke effects and the dome helmet fully formed on the first try.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (1964) - One of the six, in the team-up that defined Spider-Man's villain roster for sixty years.
  • Daredevil #7 (Kevin Smith run) (1999) - Guardian Devil turns Beck into a genuinely frightening character rather than a costumed trickster.
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) - Jake Gyllenhaal plays him as a disgruntled ex-Stark employee, keeping the core idea of a technician who wants credit.
Fun fact

Ditko designed the helmet as a one-way mirror dome, which means Beck has spent sixty years fighting people while looking through tinted glass with a fishbowl on his head, and the comics have never once pretended that is convenient.

Collecting Mysterio through the years

ASM #13 has ridden the same curve as the rest of the early run, with the 2019 film adding a step change in attention. Purple and green cover inks from 1964 are prone to the sort of fading that graders notice, and because the issue sat mid-run it was never saved as deliberately as the single-digit issues. Collectors chasing the Sinister Six set usually find this one and ASM #9 the easiest two to land in mid grade, with #3 and the Annual doing most of the damage to the budget.

Mysterio on VeVe

Mysterio is part of the Sinister Villains series on VeVe. He is arguably the best fit in the set for a digital sculpt, since fog, the cape and a reflective dome are three things that are difficult to photograph well and straightforward to render. Sinister Villains releases drop on schedule with tiered rarities.
