Why Magik matters to collectors

Illyana first showed up in 1975 as a six-year-old in Giant-Size X-Men #1. Then Belasco took her to Limbo, and when she came back she was a teenager with a soulsword and a demonic arm. Comics rarely commit to an idea that strange, and the fact that Marvel kept it is why Magik has one of the most loyal followings on the X-books.

Key issues and milestones

  • Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975) - Her first appearance as a small child, in the same issue that relaunched the entire franchise.
  • Magik #1 (1983) - The four-issue limited series that fills in the Limbo years Belasco stole from her.
  • The New Mutants #73 (1988) - The Inferno fallout that returns her to childhood, undoing years of character growth in one stroke.
  • Avengers vs. X-Men #5 (2012) - One of the Phoenix Five, which is as much raw power as the character has ever been handed.
Fun fact

The soulsword is made from Illyana's own soul, which means it does nothing to physical bodies and everything to magic - it cuts spells, not people.

Collecting Magik through the years

Magik collecting has an odd shape because her two first appearances are so far apart. Giant-Size X-Men #1 is a legitimate Bronze Age grail that people buy for Storm, Nightcrawler and Wolverine, with Illyana as a footnote on the census. New Mutants #14 is the book Magik fans actually chase, and for years it sat in quarter bins next to the rest of the title. The New Mutants run as a whole was undervalued through the 2000s, which makes it one of the last 1980s Marvel titles that a patient collector could complete cheaply.

Magik on VeVe

Magik appears as part of the Phoenix Five series, which pairs the Phoenix flame effects with each character's own visual language. For her that means the soulsword, the armour plating, and the Limbo silhouette. Phoenix Five releases are scheduled drops with rarity tiers, and the set reads best when the five are displayed together rather than alone.
