Why Loki matters to collectors
Loki is the villain who became the most flexible character Marvel has. He has been a straight antagonist, a child, a woman, a god of stories and an unreliable narrator, and the reason all of it works is that the original 1962 version was defined by motive rather than method. He wants to be taken seriously. Everything else is tactics.
Key issues and milestones
- Journey into Mystery #85 (1962) - His Marvel debut, two issues into the Thor feature.
- The Avengers #1 (1963) - Loki's scheming is what accidentally assembles the Avengers, which makes him the reason the team exists.
- Journey into Mystery #622 (2011) - Kieron Gillen's Kid Loki run begins, and the character stops being a villain in any straightforward sense.
- Loki (2021) - Tom Hiddleston's series turns a supporting antagonist into the centre of a multiversal storyline.
The horned helmet is a Kirby invention with no basis in Norse myth at all. Nothing in the Eddas gives Loki horns, and the design is now so dominant that museums get asked about it.
Collecting Loki through the years
Journey into Mystery #85 has climbed steadily since the films began, and it now sits among the more expensive non-Spider-Man Silver Age Marvel debuts. It is worth knowing that a different Loki appeared in Timely's Venus #6 back in 1949, which occasionally muddies listings, though the market treats the 1962 issue as the first appearance that counts. Early Journey into Mystery books have thin covers and browning interiors as standard, so white pages on a 1962 copy are unusual and graders reward them accordingly.

Loki appears in VeVe's Marvel Mightys line. The horned helmet is one of the few superhero designs that improves in a stylised format, because the silhouette is already exaggerated and the chibi proportions push it further.
