Why Jane Foster (Mighty Thor) matters to collectors
Jane Foster spent five decades as a supporting character before Jason Aaron gave her Mjolnir, and the run that followed is one of the best Thor stories Marvel has published. The detail that makes it work is that every time she transforms, her chemotherapy stops working. The power costs her something specific and measurable.
Key issues and milestones
- Journey into Mystery #84 (1962) - Her first appearance, in the second Thor story ever published.
- Thor #1 (Vol. 4) (2014) - A new Thor lifts the hammer, with the identity kept hidden from readers for months.
- The Mighty Thor #705 (2018) - The Death of the Mighty Thor, the climax of Aaron's run and the payoff to the cancer storyline.
- Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) - Natalie Portman plays the Mighty Thor, adapting the Aaron run for the screen.
The enchantment on Mjolnir does not say anything about being Thor. It says whosoever is worthy, and when Jane lifts it the hammer simply rewrites her - which is why the book could keep her identity secret from readers for eight issues.
Collecting Jane Foster (Mighty Thor) through the years
Journey into Mystery #84 is the second Thor issue and it lives permanently in the shadow of #83, which is good news for anyone collecting it - it is one of the more attainable 1962 Marvel books with a meaningful first appearance in it. Thor #1 from 2014 is a modern key with a large print run and a set of ratio variants that are considerably harder to find, and the identity reveal in issue #8 of that run is collected separately. As with all recent books, the graded census is deep and grade drives everything.
