Why Green Goblin matters to collectors

Every hero has an archenemy, but very few of them have one who killed the love interest and got away with it. Norman Osborn is the reason Spider-Man stories can go somewhere genuinely dark, and the 1973 Gwen Stacy issue is still the moment most cited as the end of the Silver Age.

Key issues and milestones

  • The Amazing Spider-Man #14 (1964) - The first appearance, in an issue that also features the Hulk and an early Spider-Man film pitch as a plot device.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man #39 (1966) - The mask comes off and Norman Osborn is revealed, in John Romita Sr's first issue on the title.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man #121 (1973) - The Night Gwen Stacy Died, and the single most consequential Spider-Man story ever published.
  • Dark Avengers #1 (2009) - Norman runs the country's superhuman apparatus, which is the most anyone has ever let a Spider-Man villain get away with.
Fun fact

Stan Lee and Steve Ditko disagreed about who the Goblin should turn out to be. Lee wanted a character readers already knew; Ditko wanted a stranger, on the grounds that in real life the man under the mask is usually nobody you have met.

Collecting Green Goblin through the years

ASM #14 is a first-tier Silver Age key and one of the most heavily graded Spider-Man books after the debut itself. Collectors also chase #121 and #122 as a pair, since the Goblin dies in the second one, and they move together in the market for that reason. A detail worth knowing on #14: the cover has a large flat green area that shows wear immediately, so apparently clean raw copies often grade lower than buyers expect. Steve Ditko reportedly walked away from the title partly over the reveal of the Goblin's identity, which gives the 1966 issue its own historical weight.

Green Goblin on VeVe

The Green Goblin arrives in VeVe's Marvel Mightys line, where the stylised treatment does something useful with a character whose design is already close to a caricature. The purple, the glider and the pumpkin bombs all survive the scale reduction. Marvel Mightys drops are scheduled with tiered rarities.
