Why Fantastic Four matters to collectors

Everything Marvel became started here. The Fantastic Four were a family that bickered, lived in a public address in Manhattan, and had no interest in secret identities - all of which was new in 1961. The first hundred issues introduced Doctor Doom, the Skrulls, the Inhumans, Galactus, the Silver Surfer and Black Panther, which is the densest run of creation in the medium.

Key issues and milestones

  • Fantastic Four #3 (1961) - The uniforms and the Fantasticar arrive, along with the Baxter Building - the team becomes a franchise here.
  • Fantastic Four #5 (1962) - Doctor Doom's first appearance, in a time-travel story only four issues into the run.
  • Fantastic Four #48 (1966) - The Galactus Trilogy opens with the first appearance of the Silver Surfer, in what is widely called the peak of Lee and Kirby.
  • Fantastic Four #52 (1966) - Black Panther debuts, the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics.
Fun fact

Issue #10 put Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the story as themselves, with Doctor Doom walking into the Marvel offices to hire them - in 1962, two years before anyone used the word metafiction about comics.

Collecting Fantastic Four through the years

Fantastic Four #1 is one of the three or four most important comics of the twentieth century and sits at the front of the Silver Age market alongside Amazing Fantasy #15. Copies exist in reasonable numbers for a 1961 book, but the cover stock scuffs and the spine splits easily, so high-grade examples are rare and command accordingly. There is a well-known 9-cent price variant that collectors watch for. The first sixty issues as a set represent more first appearances than any comparable run, which is why complete-run collecting on this title is a long-term project rather than a shopping trip.
