Why Black Cat matters to collectors

Felicia is the best argument in comics for a rogue who is never quite an enemy. She steals, she flirts, she helps, and she leaves. Marv Wolfman built her as a foil rather than a threat, and forty-five years later writers still use her the same way because it keeps working.

Key issues and milestones

  • The Amazing Spider-Man #194 (1979) - Her first appearance, near the end of the Bronze Age and just before the market started paying attention to firsts.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man #226 (1982) - Her return, and the start of the long stretch where she is a partner more often than an opponent.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man #256 (1984) - First appearance of the Foreigner, in a run where Felicia is driving the plot rather than reacting to it.
  • Black Cat #1 (2019) - Jed MacKay gives her a heist book of her own, which is the format the character should always have had.
Fun fact

Her bad-luck power was originally not a superpower at all - it was staged, using equipment and accomplices, and Marvel only made it an actual probability field several years later.

Collecting Black Cat through the years

ASM #194 is one of the last genuinely affordable Bronze Age Spider-Man firsts, though it has climbed steadily as she picked up game and animation appearances. It was printed in 1979 volumes, so raw copies are everywhere and grade decides everything - the black cover shows every spine tick, which is why high-grade slabs are far scarcer than the print run implies. That dark-cover problem is the same issue collectors run into with early 1980s black-cover books generally, and it is worth knowing before buying raw.

Black Cat on VeVe

Felicia appears in VeVe's Marvel Mightys line. The stylised format leans on her silhouette, which is mostly the hair and the mask, and those read clearly even at chibi proportions. Marvel Mightys releases are scheduled drops with the standard rarity tiers and a limited top-end edition.
