Why Akuma (Gouki) matters to collectors

Akuma is the best secret in arcade history. In 1994 you had to win a run of matches without losing a round, without using super moves, and then hold a specific input on the character select screen, at which point he dropped out of the sky, killed the final boss and fought you instead. Nothing about him was explained. The rumours spread faster than the game did.

Key issues and milestones

  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo (1994) - The hidden boss appearance that made him a legend before anyone knew his name.
  • X-Men vs Street Fighter (1996) - One of the crossover titles that made him a regular playable fighter rather than a secret.
  • Street Fighter Alpha series (1996) - The prequel games that explain the Satsui no Hado and his connection to Ryu and Gouken.
  • Street Fighter V (2016) - The design used by the current figure series, with the prayer beads and the kanji back piece.
Fun fact

His Japanese name is Gouki, and the hidden 1994 version was so strong that tournament play banned him almost immediately after players worked out how to select him.

Collecting Akuma (Gouki) through the years

Akuma's collecting profile is unusual because he had no merchandise at all during the period that made him famous. He was a rumour on a playground before he was a product. Everything came later, through the crossover games and the Alpha series, which is why Japanese scale figures and high-end statues dominate his physical range rather than any vintage toy line. The kanji for ten, meaning heaven, burned onto his back is the single most reproduced element of the design and shows up on almost every piece made of him.

VeVe has released Akuma in the Street Fighter V figure series, drawing on that game's design with the prayer beads and the back kanji. He suits static display well, because the crouched Messatsu pose is already one of the most recognisable images in the franchise.
